[ She sticks one (icy) foot on his, grinning. ]

But you probably shouldn't tell your girlfriend about your dream girlfriend.

[puppydoctor]

[He jumps just a little, but quickly traps her foot between his own warmer ones.]

Oh, my real girlfriend doesn't have anything to worry about.

[coppelganger]

Good to know.

[ She sips at her tea, staying quiet for several seconds. She knows what needs to come next, but it's too easy to pretend that their conversation about what she is ended last night. ]

[puppydoctor]

[He catches onto her silence, and puts a reassuring hand on her arm.]

Hey, listen - whenever you want to tell me the rest of it, I'm all ears.

[coppelganger]

I think I should tell you now. Give you a chance to run.

[ She's only half-joking. ]

[puppydoctor]

May as well glue me to my seat, 'cause I'm staying right here.

[One last goofy smile before things get serious.]

[coppelganger]

[ She gives him a wry smile in return. He's sweet, but she's still not entirely convinced that after this conversation is over, he's not going to want to get the hell away from her as fast as possible. ]

It's kind've a complicated story. I'm not really sure where to start.

[puppydoctor]

[He gives her arm another rub, but then retracts his hand, not wanting her to feel pressured at all.]

When did you first find out?

[coppelganger]

Uh... god, it's been less than a year.

[ It feels like a lot longer. ]

I grew up an orphan. I was in foster care from the time I was born. Eventually I was adopted, but I always wondered about my real parents, you know? Turns out I haven't got any.

[ She does a good job of sounding calm when she talks about growing up an orphan. She's had a long time to learn how to talk about it in a way that doesn't make other people uncomfortable. It still hurts, deep down, but like hell is she going to let on. ]

The others grew up thinking they were biologically related to the parents that raised them. The parents thought that, too. We were all raised unaware, but we were supposed to grow up in real families.
